Douro, from the valleys to the city

FIND IT OUT

To dive in the Bestança Valley is to go to the past and to a nature where human action left a slight impression. The terraces erected, along the slope of the valley, served as support for lands where Man sowed and planted his daily sustenance. The paths, inaccessible to any type of machinery, have been trodden by countless generations, since the beginning of nationality. From the time when there was so little land for so many people, we moved on to the time of so much land for so few people. Secular chapels and religious niches are living remains of a time marked by high population density and the existence of a nobility with power. At present, we are faced with the clear waters of the river Bestança and its tributaries, an almost unique fauna and an indigenous flora that is worth to be known. From the bottom of the valley to the top of Montemuro, we find a unique time and a unique space where, as the poet says “Cinfães is the Earth where the gods fought in favor”. Like the waters of Bestança, from the valley to the mountains, many people left for Porto. Invicta and secular city, populated by monuments, which, like its people, are unique and unparalleled heritage. Living the City, its magic, the bustle of its orderly, hospitable, enterprising, affective and joyful people, is to feel the human action, which turns the rough into beautiful and makes this space unique in the World.
